A novel method for exploring the power system saddle node and Hopf bifurcation boundaries in the space of active and reactive powers has been proposed in the paper. This method is of iterative type with an eigenvalue sensitivity approach used to find a first bifurcation point and a parameter continuation technique used to locate the entire saddle node and Hopf bifurca-tion boundaries. It has been discovered that, at least for the simple power system model employed here, the method is robust enough. Further studies are required to apply the method to large power systems. The method can be used for estimation of the maximum transfer limits in this field. Estimation of electrical power system steady-state stability " , IEEE Trans. The point C with P 1 =-5 and Q 1 =10 is placed within the load flow feasibility domain but outside the inner part of the Hopf bifurcation boundary. The transient process for load voltage and the phase portrait are given in Fig. 8. One can see a fast well damped oscillatory mode and growing low frequency oscillation corresponding to an eigenvalue with the positive real part.
